So…I’ve been out of town, which resulted in two things:
1. I’ve woefully neglected my blog.
2. I read four romance novels.
I’ve made no secret of my love for trashy books (hence Trashy Paperback Tuesdays). So, it should come as no surprise that I spent my down time getting caught up on some good ol’ historical romance. Specifically, I finished up Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane series (to date – the latest book just came out). And, while reading, I noticed that 3 books in particular from this series would be PERFECT for comic geeks:
Thief of Shadows, Lord of Darkness, and Duke of Midnight all center around a vigilante character who fights crime while wearing a disguise. Sounds like a superhero to me! If you enjoy superhero comics, TV shows, or movies, these books are super accessible…even if you’ve never read romance before (or never even thought of reading romance before).
I tested my “this is a superhero book” theory out on Mr. Candyfloss, resident uber comic book geek. He usually reads sci-fi and horror novels, but his interest was sufficiently piqued – and he quickly read Thief of Shadows. And…He really enjoyed it & is looking forward to reading the others!
If you’ve never read romance before, the “steamy” bits may raise an eyebrow. Hoyt tends to be very, er…descriptive. She also writes incredibly exciting action scenes, and her heroines are feisty, clever, complex, and some are even (gasp!) over 30 years old. Alas, no superheroines yet, but the series is still going…so…*crosses fingers*
These three books are obviously part of a larger series, but they can definitely stand on their own as well.
If you decide to take the plunge (so to speak), please let me know what you think in the comments. Also, let me know if you’ve run across superhero tropes in unexpected places – I’m always looking out for new things to add to the “to be read” pile!
